Shawnee's population is 56,000 and the city is one of the fastest growing communities in Kansas.  Playing a big role in this growth is the city’s excellent access via I-35, I-435, K-7 and nearby I-70.  Shawnee was one of the first settlements  in Kansas and many families of Shawnee’s pre-Civil War settlers are still active today in the Shawnee community.

The city Of Shawnee Kansas is named after the Shawnee Indians who were relocated to the area in the 1820's.  The westward push of white settlements divided the Shawnees and signed treaties led to their relocation into Kansas.  In exchange for their Missouri land, the United States gave the Shawnee Indians 1.6 million acres of land in eastern Kansas, including all of Johnson County.  In a treaty 30 years later, the Shawnee Indians sold back to the U.S. all but 200,000 acres reserved for their homes.   The U.S. government then sold off the territory to incoming home-seekers.  Shawneetown was platted soon thereafter in 1856.  Several years later Shawnee was in the middle of the Civil War and border struggles led to the destruction of the town.  Much of the population moved to Olathe and Shawnee became a small farm community.  In the 1950's Shawnee's population grew as people left overpopulated urban areas.  The city has since tripled in population.

Shawnee KS offers its residents 13 parks and numerous activities.  The 1250-acre Shawnee Mission Park and Lake is located within the city and Tomahawk Hills Golf Course and Recreation Center offers golf, swimming and indoor sports programs.  Shawnee ranks at the top of local cities in volume and types of community activities.  The city has been recognized as bicycle friendly due to it's unique wide streets.  

Many businesses and shopping areas are located in Shawnee Kansas.  Shawnee works closely with Chamber of Commerce and the business community, which has led to a strong commitment to promoting the commercial, industrial, and civic progress of the Shawnee community.

Old Shawnee Town offers an Old West feel and features many original 19th century buildings.  The Johnson County Museum is located in Shawnee and displays artifacts and photographs of early life in Johnson County.  Wonderscope Children's Museum has interactive exhibits for children.

Shawnee Kansas schools are known for their excellence.  Students attend Shawnee Mission School District and De Soto School District and all grade levels consistently score above the national average on standardized tests.  A list of Shawnee schools with links to each individual school is located at the bottom of this page.
